Picked up a pretty nice FN Mauser '06, factory made in the 50s or 60s as a sporter, but with the barrel somehow let to rust out, and would like to have it rebarreled to .308, I assumed this would be pretty easy, might have to block off the magazine a little and use a shorter follower and spring but I did not figure any other problems.

I have participated in more than one gun forum argument about Spanish small ring Mausers chambered in ".308 Win", and the fools that insist there's no danger shooting .308W in them. I've seen plenty of them where the shooter got lucky with the best case scenario of bolt lug setback.

The problem with altering to the 308 is that the rails hold the cartridge down too long. It starts up the ramp before releasing and is jammed there by the advancing bolt. Once the rail dimensions are determined a jig could easily be made to alter the rails to feed the shorter more straight cased 308.

Re: Building a .308 on a Turkish Large Ring Mauser action. Next up, machinist's dye shows that the left lug and the safety lug are making contact with the receiver, but the right lug isn't doing anything. This is probably fine from a safety standpoint (large ring Mausers are absurdly strong), but it's far from ideal for accuracy.

The 8mm Mauser was a German hunting gun adapted to warfare. It is the opposite, a Military round used for hunting, just as the .30-06 its' child is. It compares similarly with the 30-06 Springfield, although slightly less powerful than the 06. But more powerful than the 308. I'm not sure where you get your data.

I have Mauser 98 built by Steyer for some south America country. The rifles were 7x57 and they were converted to 308 win (7.62 Nato) in 1961. They had rebored the barrels for the 30 cal instead of the 7mm cal. The magazine had a spacer installed for the shorter cases. The problem I had was the rifle would shoot 165 grain or heavier bullets.

There is a big difference, as ex-mil rifle cambered to fire 7.62x51 NATO are usually not chambered or proofed to fire commercial .308 ammo which can be a lot hotter. So, trying to find a 7.62x51 NATO ex-milsurp Mauser may not be that beneficial to you if you can only get US commercial .308 ammo. E.
